Herringbone Shower Wall Tile in Green Mountain, Lakewood
About This Project
This walk-in shower in a Green Mountain, Lakewood home was a full gut and retile. The client chose a white 2x6 ceramic tile set in a herringbone pattern on the shower walls, paired with a matte black rain head and hand shower. The floor is a white penny mosaic with a matte black linear drain. The combination of the diagonal wall pattern and the small-format mosaic floor creates visual interest without competing with each other.
Herringbone installation on a shower wall requires establishing a true vertical center line and working outward from it. The 45-degree cuts at every perimeter, niche, and corner are the most time-consuming part of the job. We used a laser level to keep the reference line true across all four walls. The niche was framed, waterproofed separately, and given a slight back-slope of about 1/8 inch per foot so water drains rather than pooling. This is a detail that gets skipped in faster installs but matters significantly over time.
What We Did
Demolished existing shower, inspected substrate, installed cement board and waterproofing membrane
Established laser-level vertical center line; set herringbone pattern outward from center on all walls
Built and waterproofed niche with back-slope; installed penny mosaic floor with mortar bed pitch to drain
Grouted, cleaned, caulked all corners and transitions, final walkthrough
