Natural Stone & Marble Installation
Stone has its own logic. Veining, porosity, weight, and movement all factor in before the first tile is set.
Working With Natural Stone
Natural stone is not a forgiving material. Marble, travertine, slate, limestone, and granite each have different levels of porosity, hardness, and sensitivity to the chemicals in standard thinset. For most natural stone, we use a white, non-sanded thinset rather than a gray one, because gray pigment can bleed through the stone and permanently alter its appearance, particularly in lighter marbles like Calacatta or Carrara.
Veining orientation is something we plan before the first tile is laid out. In a large living room floor, the veins running in consistent directions across multiple tiles creates a coherent look. In a shower, bookmatching, where two tiles are opened like pages of a book so the veins mirror each other, is a technique that takes planning but produces a result that looks intentional rather than random. We discuss these options during the walkthrough so you know exactly what to expect before work begins.
Stone tiles also tend to be heavier than porcelain, which affects the substrate requirements. A mortar bed is often appropriate for large-format stone floors, both for flatness control and to provide the rigid, stable base that heavier tiles need to prevent cracking over time.
Sealing and Maintenance
Most natural stone requires a penetrating impregnating sealer applied after installation and periodically thereafter. The sealer fills the microscopic pores in the stone to resist staining from water, oil, and cleaning products. How often a stone needs to be resealed depends on the stone type, the finish (honed versus polished), and the amount of traffic or moisture the surface sees. We apply the initial sealer after grouting and provide honest guidance on what to expect for ongoing care.
