Beige herringbone ceramic tile backsplash in a warm kitchen with shaker cabinets and wood shelves

Kitchen Backsplash & Floor Tile

Layouts centered on the room, not the wall. Clean cuts around outlets. Tile that actually fits the kitchen.

Backsplash Installation

A kitchen backsplash is a relatively contained job, but the details matter more than the square footage suggests. The layout decision that separates a professional result from a rushed one is where the tile is centered. Most people assume you start from a corner. We start from the visual center of the most prominent wall section, usually the space between the range hood and the countertop, and work outward. That way, the cut pieces at the edges are equal on both sides and are tucked into less visible corners.

For herringbone patterns, the angle of the first tile sets every subsequent tile in the run. A single piece that is even slightly off true 45 degrees will compound across the wall. We use a laser level and a story pole to establish the reference lines before the first tile is touched.

Outlets and switches require scribe cuts or outlet extenders depending on tile thickness. We account for that in the estimate so there are no surprises when the electrician needs to adjust the box depth.

Kitchen Floor Tile

Kitchen floors see grease, dropped items, water from the sink, and constant foot traffic. The tile itself matters less than the substrate and adhesive selection. On a wood subfloor, we install cement board or Ditra uncoupling membrane to give the tile a stable, non-flexing surface. On a concrete slab, we check for moisture vapor transmission before choosing the adhesive, because high moisture can break down standard thinset over time.

Large-format tiles (24x24 or larger) in kitchens require a medium-bed mortar and back-buttering to achieve the full coverage needed to prevent hollow spots. A hollow spot under a large tile will crack the tile the first time something heavy lands on it. We use a rubber mallet and a straightedge after each tile is set to confirm it is fully bedded and flat.
