Travertine-Look Floor in a Golden Foothills Living Room
About This Project
This double-height living room in a custom Golden foothills home received a large-format polished travertine-look porcelain floor. The scale of the room, combined with the dramatic ceiling height and the large view windows facing Clear Creek Canyon, required a tile layout that would feel proportionate. We chose a 24x48 tile run in a brick offset pattern parallel to the main window wall, which draws the eye toward the view rather than across it.
Golden's proximity to the foothills creates a specific installation requirement that is easy to overlook: movement joints. A large tile field without soft perimeter joints will experience stress as the slab and the tile assembly expand and contract with the wider temperature swings at this elevation. We installed color-matched caulk joints at all perimeter walls and at approximately every 20 feet through the field. These joints look identical to the grout lines at normal viewing distance but allow the floor to breathe. Stone sealer was applied after grouting and cure.
What We Did
Slab assessment; layout planned parallel to main window wall in 24x48 brick offset
Medium-bed mortar with full back-buttering; lippage-control system throughout
Movement joints at all perimeters and at 20-foot field intervals using color-matched caulk
Grouted; penetrating stone sealer applied; final walkthrough and cleanup
