White Subway Tile Kitchen Backsplash in Edgewater
About This Project
This Edgewater kitchen update paired new gray lower cabinets and black hardware with a classic white 3x6 subway tile backsplash in a running bond pattern. The client wanted a clean, timeless look that would not compete with the cabinet color choice. White subway tile in a standard 1/3 offset (running bond) achieves that reliably, but the layout execution determines whether it looks sharp or sloppy.
In this kitchen, the range hood created an asymmetric focal point. We centered the layout on the range hood rather than on the full wall width, which placed equal tile cuts on both sides of the hood and made the backsplash look intentional. Grout color was a medium gray rather than white, which makes the individual tile shapes visible from across the room and gives the wall more visual texture than an all-white application. All outlet boxes received precision wet-saw cuts to maintain tight tolerances at the box edges.
What We Did
Layout centered on range hood, not on wall width; dry-laid pattern to verify cut symmetry
Set 3x6 white subway tile in running bond with mastic adhesive appropriate for kitchen walls
Precision wet-saw cuts at all outlets, switches, and cabinet edges
Medium gray unsanded grout applied; caulk at countertop-to-tile joint; final cleanup
