Dark Concrete-Look Kitchen Floor in Wheat Ridge

Dark charcoal concrete-look porcelain floor tiles in an industrial-style Wheat Ridge open kitchen and dining area

About This Project

This open-plan kitchen and dining area in a Wheat Ridge home received a dark charcoal concrete-look porcelain tile floor. The large 24x24-inch format in a matte finish was chosen to complement the white modern cabinetry and industrial-style fixtures. The concrete-look surface is a rectified porcelain, meaning the edges are precision-cut to allow very tight 1/16-inch grout joints that make the floor feel more like poured concrete than tile.

The Wheat Ridge slab under this kitchen had a hairline crack running diagonally across the dining area. Rather than filling the crack and hoping for the best, we installed an uncoupling membrane over the entire slab before setting tile. The membrane isolates the tile layer from the slab, so if the crack continues to move slightly, the movement does not telegraph into the tile above. This is particularly important with tight-joint installations where any crack in the substrate would be immediately visible in the grout line above it.

What We Did

1

Slab inspection; uncoupling membrane installed over full floor area including the cracked zone

2

Layout planned from the main doorway threshold to minimize cuts at visible entry

3

Rectified 24x24 porcelain set with membrane-appropriate thinset; 1/16-inch joints maintained

4

Dark charcoal unsanded grout; sealer applied; transition strips at all room entries
